Unusual, though meaningful and common
Welling up from a source of emotion that words can’t explain
The body may quiver and the lungs seize
Sounds of pounding in ears as the heart races
And sputters
Breath hitches in the throat as the face contorts
Eyes wide open, unblinking, staring upward
An attempt at maintaining a neutral expression
A failed attempt to urge the waterfall back to its place
Failure to understand that once released it can’t be stopped
It grew into a life of its own
It moved through the central nervous system
Traveled through the emotional contours of logic
Skirted around words spoken to comfort
The drip from the outer corner of the eye
Builds into a steady leak over the lower eyelid
Before it cascades from the eye’s tear duct
To chart a course downward in accordance with gravity
An Etch-A-Sketch of lines race down the face
Curving around the nose and gathering above the lip
Then, having decided, drops to moisten the wearer’s shirt
